The Argument Hurting Trans People (made by trans people)

Here is the original YouTube clip from The Trans-Atlantic Call-In Show on The Line:

I've also included the call summary from the video:

This call was extremely painful to listen to. The caller (Andrew) was very respectful and navigated the conversation gently and empathetically. Irritatingly, these two ladies responded by:

  • repeatedly contradicting themselves about whether gender dysphoria is or is not a mental illness within the first five minutes (and again throughout the call),

  • claimed gender dysphoria isn't a mental illness simply because people find it insulting, obliviously perpetuating the notion that having a mental illness is a negative stigma while appealing to their delicate emotions instead of accepting science, reality, and basic logic because apparently, mental illness = icky feefees = therefore not real,

  • and figuratively shot themselves in the foot by arguing that gender dysphoria isn't a condition that needs treatment, thereby denying the very reason trans people need medical care like HRT.

This was my response to a rude comment I saw about the caller:

I just can't with this nonsense anymore. These ladies, as well as many in their audience, need to grow the fuck up. Calling an obese person obese isn't an insult. It's medically accurate. Gender dysphoria is not normal. Just like depression, high blood pressure, or a deviated septum isn't normal. Medicine is designed to treat the abnormal. If trans people want easier access to medical care, they're going to have to get over themselves and accept that they have a mental condition requiring treatment.

The obsession with using language that doesn't “insult" anyone is insufferable. It's medically accurate and necessary in establishing diagnosing criteria. Facts don't care about your feelings, pookie. I hate to watch people repeatedly behave in ways that make their lives exceedingly more difficult than they already are.

So trans people, do yourselves a favor and stop making this bullshit argument so you can receive the healthcare you're entitled to just like everyone else with a diagnosable condition. Being trans doesn't give you special rights to subvert the medical system just because you don't like the sound of a medical classification. Put on your big girl/boy/non-binary panties and quit trying to gaslight the world into believing a mental illness isn't a mental illness. You need to acknowledge that so you can get what you need to be happy.

I'm telling you this with all the love I can muster inside my black, shriveled heart—please pull your heads out of your assholes and stop with this illogical, manipulative, cringy, counterproductive fuckery. It's time to face reality. Having a mental illness is not a value judgment. It's a medical condition. Own it so you can get the help you need to live authentically as you are. Pretty please, for fuck's sake.

***Sorry I got shouty. I love y'all. You're just being really stupid, and it makes me grumpy. Smooches***
